You Don’t Need a Niche. You Need a Life.
When I started this blog, and any of the other ones I've attempted over the years. I always got stuck on what to write about. I have tried different approaches with very little success. Whether it be blogs about personal life, or more professional ones about specific subjects.
I could never stick to them for very long before I got bored with them. I was writing to try to make money with a blog. It felt too much like being at a job I hated. I was constantly online reading, trying to find things to blog about to keep them alive.
When I wrote these blogs I felt like I needed to sound like everyone else, it just wasn't me.
I was stuck. I would read about how I needed a niche, I should take a course, or so-and-so makes $1000 off one post. So many people are out there telling me how to write and do it their way.
The truth is, these people are full of shit. Don't get me wrong, they may be good writers and have had success with it, but they won't teach you how to become them.
Let's break down all the types of people that are misleading you.
The Niche Gatekeepers
Every superstar blogger who blogs about blogging tells you to find your niche. You'll never have a successful blog without a niche, they say. Naturally, they will help you find that niche and teach you how to write about it for a price. I agree that you need to have at least an idea of what you want to write about, but dont stress over it.
If you want to write, then just write. You're allowed to put words on the internet and you dont need anyone's approval. It doesn't matter if you're a good writer. I write like shit, but I do it anyway. You will most likely find your voice along the way. The people who are telling you this are only doing it because they dont have anything else to write about.
It's the same reason I wrote this post. I just don't have anything to sell you. I was bored and wanted to rant about something.
The Click Baiters
“I made $1000 a day on my blog with this one trick” and then they go on to tell you absolutely nothing. It was just a blog post full of garbage so they could rank on Google and make money from ads. The posts seem to just be written by AI anymore. I would love to punch these people in the mouth every time I fall for reading it. I guess it's my own fault though, I keep letting them trick me into reading it.
The Course Selling Gurus
The worst of the worst. You know what they say, those who can't do, teach. I'm convinced that this is the new pyramid scheme for the internet, Charles Ponzi would be impressed.
Their business model is a snake eating its own tail:
They make money teaching you how they make money teaching you how they make money.
All of the information is out there on the internet for free. Hell, you could have any AI chatbot teach it to you for free. It's not magic, and it's not expert advice. It's a scam.
Conclusion: Do Whatever You Want
If you want to write about a niche, go for it.
If you want to write clickbait, good for you.
If you want to sell scammy courses online—you can fuck off. But I’m not stopping you.
Maybe I just look at things differently. I don’t care if anyone reads my blog. I’d like it if they did, sure. But it doesn’t matter to me.
I’m doing this for one reason: because I want to. It’s really that simple.
